This is compost’s quiet promise: what dies can feed what’s next.
But not everything in the late summer garden belongs in the compost pile. Some plants harbor pests that thrive in our warm, humid Houston climate. Others carry disease. And some just need a different kind of goodbye. This guide helps you compost confidently—and spiritually—as you clear your garden beds with grace and prepare your soil for the cooler-season vegetables ahead.

But the key—and this matters deeply—is knowing what not to include, especially when clearing out after our long, hot Houston summer.

❌ What Not to Compost at Season’s End
1. Diseased Plants (The Big One in Houston)
If your squash had powdery mildew—and let’s be honest, it probably did by late August—don’t send it into your compost pile. Same goes for tomato blight, rust on greens, or any plant showing signs of fungal or bacterial disease. Home compost piles rarely reach the 140–160°F temperatures needed to kill pathogens. In our humid climate, disease spores can actually thrive in a warm, moist pile.
Common culprits to avoid in Zone 9:

2. Pest-Infested Vines and Leaves
If your cucumbers were crawling with aphids by August, if your squash vines were full of squash bugs laying eggs, if your peppers hosted hornworms—you don’t want those eggs, larvae, or pupae overwintering in your cozy compost pile. Home compost doesn’t get hot enough to kill pest life stages, especially not in a pile that’s shaded and moist.
Watch for these Houston-area pests:
Squash vine borers (the larvae tunnel inside vines—pull the whole vine), aphid-covered leaves (spray off into a bucket, not your compost), hornworm droppings on foliage (those caterpillars are big and need removed), and leaf miner trails (tiny larvae inside leaves—destroy them rather than compost).

Even cold compost piles—and most home piles are cold, especially ours in summer when the pile bakes—can preserve viable seeds. I’ve learned this the hard way. That handful of “finished” compost you spread in spring? If it holds weed seeds, you’re planting them intentionally.
Avoid adding seeds from:
Grasses with mature, dry seed heads (pigweed, crabgrass, foxtail), bolted lettuce or arugula with brown, dry seeds, purslane once it’s gone to seed, any weed you wouldn’t want 10,000 of in your garden bed.
Unless you’re hot-composting with a thermometer and turning it regularly to maintain 140°F+, skip the gamble. Weed seeds are built to survive.
4. Thick, Woody Stems Without Chopping
Large stalks like okra, sunflowers, or thick tomato vines aren’t “bad” for composting—but they need preparation. If you just toss them whole, you’ll be pulling out intact skeletons come spring, and your pile won’t break down evenly.
Chop or break up before composting:
Corn stalks (cut into 3–4 inch pieces), sunflower stems (split lengthwise if thick), okra or woody basil stems, and thick tomato vines (especially if you’re pulling the whole plant).

Bean vines (pull them whole when they brown), spent basil or other herbs (chop finely), disease-free tomato foliage and stems (if they’re healthy), bolted leafy greens (lettuce, spinach, arugula that has gone to seed), and fresh weeds without mature seeds (pulled from around the beds).
End-of-Summer “Browns” (Carbon-Rich Material)

Understanding Compost Temperature & Why It Matters in Houston’s Climate
One of the most crucial things to understand about what doesn’t belong in your compost is that our Houston-area home piles rarely reach the temperatures needed to neutralize disease and pests. When we talk about “hot composting,” we’re referring to aerobic decomposition at 140–160°F, the threshold where most pathogens, weed seeds, and pest larvae are killed. But here’s the reality for us in Zone 9: most backyard composters—myself included—maintain what’s called “cold compost,” which hovers between 70–100°F on a good day.
This matters enormously in our climate. Our long, humid summers mean your compost bin stays warm and moist for most of the year. That sounds ideal, but it’s actually the perfect environment for disease spores and fungal colonies to not just survive, but thrive. I learned this the hard way when I composted a batch of powdery mildew-covered squash in August and spent the next three seasons fighting the same disease in every new squash planting. The spores had simply hibernated in my “finished” compost, waiting for their next host.
If you want to compost diseased or pest-infested material, you’d need to actively manage a hot pile: turn it every few days, monitor temperature with a compost thermometer, maintain a 3:1 carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, and keep it moist but not waterlogged. Few of us do this consistently, especially through our sweltering summers. Reading Your Plants: Knowing Disease vs. Normal Decline
One question I hear often is: “But how do I know if my plant is actually diseased or just tired from the summer heat?” It’s a fair question, especially in late August when everything looks a little worn. The difference matters, because a plant simply stressed by heat is generally safe to compost, while a genuinely diseased one isn’t.
Here’s how to tell the difference. Powdery mildew appears as a white, dusty coating on leaves and stems—you can actually wipe it off and see it on your finger. You’ll see it clustering in protected spots, often on younger growth. Early tomato blight starts as brown spots with concentric rings on lower leaves, spreading upward; late blight creates water-soaked patches that quickly turn brown and collapse. Rust shows up as rusty-orange pustules on leaf undersides. Mosaic virus causes mottled, distorted leaves with yellow and green patterns that don’t wash off.
By contrast, a plant that’s simply heat-stressed shows wilting (even when watered), overall yellowing of older leaves (not spotting or pustules), and slower growth—but the foliage remains relatively uniform in appearance. The key difference: disease looks like something attacking the plant. Heat stress looks like the plant struggling to keep up.
When I’m unsure, I use this simple rule: If I can see the problem (spots, coating, pustules, distortion), I don’t compost it. If the plant just looks tired, it’s usually safe. And I always—always—inspect the base of the plant. If the roots are mushy or the soil smells sour, that’s disease or root rot. Leave it out of the pile entirely.
The Nematode Question: Why Underground Pests Are the Hidden Problem
Here’s something many gardeners don’t think about until it’s too late: root knot nematodes. These tiny roundworms are impossibly common in Houston gardens, especially in the same beds where we’ve grown tomatoes, okra, peppers, or sweet potatoes year after year. You can’t see them, but you can see their damage—galls (lumpy growths) on the roots, stunted plants, leaves that wilt despite adequate water.
The reason I’m mentioning them here is that if you pull a tomato plant in late summer and notice galls on the roots, composting that whole plant—roots and all—will simply move the problem into your compost. And when you use that compost in your beds next year, you’re reintroducing the nematodes. It’s a cycle that’s terribly hard to break.
Nematode-infested plant material should be bagged and removed from your property entirely. There’s no amount of composting—hot or cold—that kills nematode eggs. They’re built for survival. If you notice galls, consider it useful information: that bed needs crop rotation, or a cover crop like marigolds next season (which suppresses nematodes), or a break from those susceptible plants for a year.

If you find nematode damage, document which plants were affected and rotate those families away from that bed for at least two seasons. It’s a longer rhythm, but it works.

When we compost thoughtfully—refusing to recycle disease and pests, but eagerly closing the loop on healthy material—we’re practicing a kind of gardening grace.
