For the Pear Topping

ripe but firm pears, peeled, cored, and sliced

For the Cake Batter

½ cup butter, softened

Instructions
Prepare the Topping
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) .
In your cake pan or skillet, melt butter over low heat.
Stir in brown sugar until combined and slightly bubbling.
Arrange pear slices over the sugar mixture in a fan pattern.
Sprinkle with thyme leaves and set aside.
Make the Batter
In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
In another bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
Beat in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla and lemon zest.
Alternate adding dry ingredients and milk, mixing gently until just combined.
Assemble & Bake
Pour batter evenly over the pears, smoothing the top.
Bake 40–45 minutes , until golden and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Let rest 10 minutes , then carefully invert onto a plate.
